Creating a collaborative innovation ecosystem to future-proof shipping

Standing out among the hustle and bustle of the Posidonia Expo taking place in Athens this week was Tuesday’s Maritime Technology Demo Day. Co-organised by TMV, The Captain’s Table, lomarlabs, Signal Ventures, CyberOwl, Flagship Founders, SSY, Cetus Maritime and Maritime London with support from Lloyd’s Register, motion Ventures and theDock, the event gave the floor to sixteen tech startups from around the world who pitched their maritime solutions amidst a full house of shipowners, charterers, operators, investors and industry leaders at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Aiming at driving innovation and facilitating a global exchange of inspiration and know-how towards a sustainable maritime sector, the successful initiative brought together a promising mix of products and solutions for the shipping industry in climate-tech, safety, automation, and commerce.

From self-driving vessels to hull grooming robots, frontline work to ship consumable procurement platforms to automatic object and smell detection systems, the selected startups showcased their innovative thinking and just how well they understand the needs of the shipping industry at this pivotal time for its future. Decarbonisation solutions dominated the stage with many of the startups pitching how their products will help the industry meet future regulations.

We are proud that two of lomarlabs’ portfolio startups were among them: Calcarea, a company safely converting carbon captured from engine emissions into oceanic bicarbonate and Alicia Bots, manufacturer of a pioneering hull grooming robot.

Maritime Technology Demo Day gathered stakeholders from Asia, Europe, and America, exemplifying the potential of an open, collaborative innovation ecosystem that can propel global-scale solutions to address today’s challenges and prepare shipping for the future.
